I always thought the bigger miss of the common phrase is this: If “With great power comes great responsibility” then the converse must also be true “With NO POWER comes NO responsibility”. The level of responsibility must scale in direct proportion to the amount of power you have. If your boss is blaming you for something you have little to no control over, then it isn’t your responsibility, and you deserve no blame.

Your manager saying “You need to find someone to cover your shift” would then be bullshit. Unless you have the power to hire additional staff, allow for allowed time off for regular life events, or increase the pay of staff to make others more readily want to take the shift, I don’t see enough power for it to be your responsibility.

This isn’t and has never been Nintendo’s desired goal. Needless obsolete handheld computers laying around is a feature not a bug. Nintendo wants to sell more hardware. If you’re able to use your hardware longer, it means lost sales. Nintendo also doesn’t want to be a general purpose OS. There’s all kinds of things you have to do as a company for a general purpose OS you don’t have to do as an embedded system as they are today.

So as an example, elimination of all IP law would mean I could start my own social media company called “X” and there would be no law preventing it. “X” is a trademark with protections preventing others from making social media companies with the same name. You could too. Everyone could start a social media company called “X”. Further, you could download the public facing look and feel code of today’s twitter, and make your X social media site look exactly the same. The HTML code used to make the site is copyright protected. You could copy that and use that too without any legal barriers.

You could also create derivative works like X brand toothpaste using the same styling and colors (called “trade dress” in IP law) along with the logo (previously copyrighted art) and name (previously trademarked). Nothing legally Musk could do to stop you.

The term “the economy” here is too broad. Under Biden, by most statistical measures, the economy at a national level was doing pretty well with back to back 20%+ increases in the stock market in the last 2 years. But that wasn’t what these voters were referring to. They were referring to their personal finances, their family’s economy. Even the bits about not liking immigrants was their misdiagnosis that immigrants were negatively affecting their family economy. They think that immigrant being present meant that their family’s economy was reduced. They think that any taxes levied on them unfairly reduce their family’s economy. They were being squeezed from all directions, lower pay & job insecurity, sky high housing costs (“the rent is too damn high!”), out of control undischargable student loan burdens, bottomless health insurance and health care costs, spiraling home insurance costs from floods/wildfires/hurricanes, and finally the price of eggs.

These voters thought that this was a broken economy, but that is a misdiagnosis. This is an issue of income inequality. Too much of the wealth of the prosperous nation is confined to a tiny fraction at the top. And this mass of voters ended up voting to make this problem worse.

Most of those are based upon non-English language references.

That’s my point. Basic SMTP email is a far cry from today’s modern email suites like Office365 or Gsuite. Suggesting a self hosted basic SMTP email as a replacement for a modern enterprise is not realistic.

They already have their own programs to do all that. They have had them since outlook was just a client and before Microsoft and Google offered email services.

I can’t quite tell what you’re recommending here. Are you saying the government should go back to using Sendmail SMTP servers, telnet or IRC chat, and NFS shares as replacements for modern enterprise communication suites?

I think you’re just thinking about word processing and spreadsheets neither of which covers the big things orgs want out of these suites: email, chat, video meetings, shared document storage.

I hope they don’t fall for it, but I’m sure they will.

The other alternative is Microsoft with Office365. If taxpayers are going to have to pay for one or the other, the cheaper one sounds like the better alternative.

You and I must have seen different speeches. Part of Thunberg’s appeal was her eloquence in speech especially speaking truth to power. Here’s part of 16 year old Greta Thunberg’s speech in the UN:

I can’t imagine a world where you’re calling that “petulant”. At 16 years old she had more poise and gravitas than many of the world leaders she was speaking to. You say she hasn’t done anything. I beg to differ. Further, if what she has done is nothing, it raises the obvious question: what have you done to avert climate catastrophe?

In this micro example, imagine if you could access all of your data for free when there as abundant sunshine (carbon free), or had to pay for carbon based energy at night. You’d start to sort your data for what you really wanted so that you’d only be paying a small amount for a small amount of data.

He’s in the same bucket as Greta Thunberg. They just like to scream and blame people instead of providing practical solutions.

Greta Thunberg is 22 years old right now, and was “screaming” and “blaming people” when she was 11 years old.

She saw the world she was going to inherit and forced conversation to work toward solutions. Expecting an 11 year old to provide answers that none of the established world has is silly.
