There’s a good deal of misinformation here. The main part being disk space. While it is true that flatpak apps will take up more space, it’s not nearly as bad as you think it is. There is a lot of really good optimization going on under the hood that you don’t see. Dependencies are de duplicated. I’m no expert on it, but I believe that dependencies also have delta changes from one version to the next.

Regarding apps not supporting building of the source, you should get over that or do the work of supporting it yourself. Open source is a hard, usually thankless job.

While the Switch 2 has better hardware, that’s only a tiny piece of the value proposition. The Deck is leagues better in value. I guarantee it will be able to play new release games for another 10 years. You can’t say that for the Switch 2. It won’t be able to play all of the new releases, sure, but thousands more than the Switch 2.

And that’s not to mention the tens of thousands of games the Deck can play now that the Switch 2 will never be able to play.

The truth is that hype and FOMO are powerful drugs that push gamers to constantly shell out their hard earned money to chase the newest things.

And, to an extent, I get it. There is something to be said about playing games when they come out and experiencing that moment with other gamers. There’s a sort of fraternal feeling about it.

But if you can step back from that and be patient, you can play all the games you have time for and not play into their trap.

That’s part of the issue, though. Sometimes they sell trash for high prices, too. Sometimes they sell the same game across three console generations and increase the price.

There are way more issues with Nintendo than just whatever your beef with Smash is.

I had win 8.1 for a long while. It really wasn’t bad. Win 11 is what finally pushed me away from Windows.

Comments shouldn’t explain code. Code should explain code by being readable.

Comments are for whys. Why is the code doing the things it’s doing. Why is the code doing this strange thing here. Why does a thing need to be in this order. Why do I need to store this value here.

Stuff like that.

No, it’s because Nintendo bad. They are incredibly anti consumer.

MK 8 is also a previous generation title that Nintendo got to double dip on already.

MK night be a good value proposition for some folks. It’s still too expensive. I have games that I’ve paid $20, $10, sometimes even less for that I’ve gotten more play time out of. Play time to cost is not a good argument.

Let me also contrast with some of Nintendo’s worst practices, like selling 3 old Mario games with no enhancements, that are just emulated, for $60.

FOMO is a helluva drug.

I think they’d receive more flak for regarding the game in it’s current state. As it is, they’re giving you exactly what they say they are: a still in development game. People who are still buying into the game do it knowing the game is still in development.

I’m an early backer of the game. I got suckered into a ship upgrade during a “sale” within a year of backing the game. I’m not upset about that. But I think people who got suckered into spending hundreds of dollars on ships early on have more legitimate complaints than folks buying in right now. Early on, it wasn’t known how it was going to go down. There was a lot of hype. But now, you know what you’re getting.

And yes, I fully understand that backing games is risky, and we shouldn’t pre-order games. I’ve changed a lot in my buying habits in 10 years.

I think the legacy of the game will entirely depend on how it turns out. If they end up releasing a game that people love, all will be forgiven.

I’m no fan of Apple, but Nintendo is worse.

Because they are one of the most consumer hostile gaming companies. The only redeeming quality is their games are usually top notch. I personally refuse to give them any more money.

I am not an artistic person, but I am creative, and I think you’re probably similar. I’m not great at CAD, 3D printing, or embedded coding. But damn is it satisfying. I’ve made a few neat things here and there, but the best thing I’ve done combines all three.

That was one of the things that drove me away from Windows. Coming to my desk in the morning to see my computer on not sleeping because it woke up to apply updates or some other shit pissed me off.

Just one of the many ways that with Windows, my computer didn’t feel like I was in control of it anymore.

With Linux, I’m in complete control and it feels so good. Also knowing that I’m not giving out data just by using my computer is great. And FOSS is just cool.

People love to prove how “smart” they are. It’s extremely reliable.

I unfortunately still mindlessly scroll Facebook when I’m bored. When I see some kind of obvious rage bait, people will trip over themselves to comment about it, even if a thousand other people have already said what they came to say.

The kind of things I’m taking about are like this. Completely mispronouncing a common word in every single video. The kind of word that no one ever mispronounces. Or someone opens their refrigerator to get something out of it and there’s random items conspicuously placed in it that obviously didn’t belong there.

The kind of things that anyone with half a brain knows is purposefully done. And yet thousands of people will shit themselves trying to get the comments opened so they can correct the record.

I’m not a Tor user, so please forgive my ignorance. Why would you say the browser being outdated means you were being tracked?

I agree. HDD to SSD was a huge leap. NVME was a small, sometimes noticable upgrade. Past that, I can’t tell a difference. And it’s hard to get excited about the hardware updates when the software can’t use it.

I have never once been about to tell a real world difference in SSD speeds. Until OS I/O code improves, faster SSDs don’t excite me.

Because of Proton and also how shit can just break on Linux (see the current glibc fiasco), it might be better to have just a Windows version.

I when I play a game, I don’t even notice if it’s Linux native unless the game specifically tells me it’s a Linux build.
