I’ve gone all-in on (properly) federated social media and I’ve got to say it’s been a great experience. After what’s happened to Twitter, with Zuck’s recently stated plans for Meta, and TikTok’s immediate Trump cocksucking, I realized that all privately-owned platforms are as good as compromised, no matter the utility they otherwise provide.
Instagram was more difficult as it was how I found out about a lot of local events, and was my primary connection to a lot of old friends, but it was worth it. I actually reach out and talk to those friends who I previously just followed. It’s restored some actually connection that social media had stripped away, and I find myself avoiding the endless scroll I used to get caught in.
I’m still working on evacuating YouTube, but using RSS feeds to be more deliberate about whose uploads I’m notified about has helped a ton.
I use fedilab, in part because it’s the best app for peertube that I’ve found. But it’s got great support for Mastodon and Pixelfed as well.

I mean, I fault Mozilla for that, and a lot of other things especially in light of recent developments. But Brave still fosters user dependency on a google project, ceding browser engine market dominance toward google. I might be bale to give Brave a pass for its faults if it was making strong moves in creating a truly free and open internet, but as-is they’ve basically taken an open-source project, applied their own branding, and baked in functionality that on a better engine can be replicated with more granular control by extensions.

A number of them have written about their reasons- I can’t speak for the maintainer this article is about but the general sentiment I’ve seen from the ones I’ve been hearing about is that the culture around kernel development is dogwater. If you made the mistake of buying an M-series Mac before migrating to Linux, Asahi is a great way to continue using that machine if you’re fine with no external displays. Since I only ever use my M1 air on the go, it doesn’t bother me.
However, you cannot wipe the existing MacOS install nor stub partitions as they’re needed for firmware updates and booting non-mac operating systems. I think I managed to squeeze my macos partition down to something like 40gb, which is a ton of unusable space on my 128GB laptop.
If you’re in the market for a new machine, there are better options in terms of affordability and usability, even if you’re specifically looking for an ARM device
