  • You asked a straight-forward question and got irrelevant responses you didn’t ask for based on their own priorities… As they’re browsing a Reddit community… on Lemmy. Weirdman. There are other reasons to be on Reddit, obviously, and you can simultaneously grow this community while having a foot there as well.

To answer your question: To my knowledge, Reddit uses a mixture of IP banning, Web Browser fingerprinting, and behavioral analysis (e.g., which subs you frequent, upvote, etc.). I think the IP ban only lasts so long — some things I’ve read after 100 days (except original registration IP)? After all, IPs are not often static for an individual or may be a gateway for many users. Which is why they associate an IP with a web browser fingerprint. They not only pull the cookies, but additional info independent of cookies about the browser used but other information like your computer monitor setup are utilized.

TOR browser used to work, but Reddit changed their log-in page and its CAPTCHA requirements fuck with its log-in.

VPN + Incognito alternative browser from what you traditionally use, or if you really want to get fancy, a VM instance. DO NOT use your phone that was linked to your banned account either to log on. Alternatively you may be able to request a new IP from your ISP? You basically have to come up with a scenario that gives a plausible scenario that you are a different user than the other person who was banned.

  • Honestly? If I had it my way, there would be a DEFCON 5 Alert across every single subreddit in solidarity with the literal fucking crisis that is happening right now. This extends well beyond how much I care about some subreddit and how randomized the platter of pics are. At the end of the day, you can’t “force” generality in a sub with loose rules on submissions; hell I think they even allow people to filter them as they’re tagged as political to begin with.

Nah r/pics is pics and pics of anything are permitted there.

Naturally it represents the zeitgeist and what is on the collection of people’s minds who frequent that sub will determine the content.

Beggars can’t be choosers. If you want more specific rules, then find more niche subs. Simple as that.

Alternatively, don’t shove fascists down our throats and this wouldn’t happen.

  • All that means is the left is primarily the populous option

Does it? This is in fact just as speculative; after all, it could also mean that the left is primarily the more logically-accurate sample. Alternatively it could mean the data sets from linguistics and critical-thinking books are inherently antithetical to the “poorly educated” conservatives (Trump’s words, not mine). Besides, I venture a guess that if this data is pulled from the vastness of the internet that includes the likes of 4chan, facebook, breitbart, fox news, and so on… Then I’m going to take a wild guess and say that the conservative sets are pretty well represented.

Not that they’re perfect, but yes, it all depends on the data sets through which they’re evaluated. Nevertheless, logic is logic and one of the easier things to parse for these machine-learning tools. Imperfect though they may, if they can code a Python application, then they can recognize that 2 + 2 != 5 just the same within linguistics.

Not the end-all solution, of course, but merely a diagnostic utility in the toolbox to help thwart fallacious thinking and gaslighting. This Software Engineer shall continue to use it absent of a better argument, thank you very much.

  • I’ve been using AI as a utility to analyze discussions with other users and to determine who has the objectively better argument. I have it compare fallacies used in both quantity and severity.

Particularly with Trump supporters it’s no surprise the ratio is usually 3 or 4:1.

It could be used in this context against AI, too, because the directive isn’t to persuade but to analyze logic.

  • You know, there’s an aspect to the bond, the camaraderie, the discipline, the fitness that I really appreciate about soldiering. Growing up with films like Band of Brothers practically on repeat, having read pretty close to every book that came out from those guys — well, I have admiration. But at the same time as I grew up and became more leftist I of course had many issues with the volatility of our leadership.

If I could’ve joined Norway, Canada, or German armed forces under the NATO banner, I may very well have done that. After seeing everything transpiring in Ukraine, I often wonder if I’d have the courage to do what those brave people are doing every day. In the right context, under purely defensive conditions, I’d like to think I would’ve thrived, but who knows…

But second to volatile leadership is quite honestly the type of people the military tends to attract. The desperate, the jar-head conservative types. If life is on the line, I’d rather not be in a foxhole with them if I’m honest.

But there’s a lot of talk that finally the culture may be shifting within the US Military — to attract smarter, better educated people. I know a lot of conservatives are retiring early and not joining up because they feel the “culture is changing,” which is a good sign to me.
