  • Edge case here: my hands are constantly dirty with things I don’t want to get on my phone (relevant hobbies include machining, gardening and calligraphy). A smart watch means I can check to see if a message is important (ex: kids/partner attempting to get ahold of me) and I can answer calls and texts just using my nose/tongue + TTS. I never understood why they were such a mainstream accessory, but they are very convenient in some circumstances.

(Edit: I just remembered another use case, my partner is medically “a dingus” and constantly loses their phone as a result, but habitually is always wearing their watch. Upgrading them to a smartwatch has meant our relationship no longer suffers the daily turmoil of tearing apart several rooms looking for it. Again pretty niche, but a wonderful QoL improvement)

It’s just now how it works though, most government firewalls wouldn’t even deliver the emails. It’s a constant pain in the ass to get legit emails in from non-government sources, even promotional marketing spam has to jump through a bunch of hoops to not get filtered (by which I mean they just pay off microsoft to get on the approved list, fucking thanks microsoft…). Fortress & Friends have very little chill and have been made even more paranoid in a bid to mitigate phishing. This is why there’s so many proxy services or even just outside email servers set up for us government correspondence (plot twist, butterymales is sop big shock I know)

As much as this comes amid a flurry of “screw the US” sentiment (and fair play for that), this move also included thirty other countries and has been a long-standing political issue in Namibia. It also was announced months ago and went into effect two weeks ago, and we’re only hearing about it now for some reason.

This bold decision, spearheaded by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is framed as a move towards establishing reciprocity in international relations, asserting that if African citizens require visas to enter the United States, then American citizens should also be subject to the same requirements when entering Namibia. The President emphasized that this policy change is not an act of aggression but a matter of fairness and national dignity.

Smart move, especially with the recent mineral finds in the country. Hope they don’t get obliterated for having the sheer audacity to not bow to imperialism.

iirc this was just an engine that could run on most combustible hydrocarbons, a small gas turbine and some elaborate digestion setup I seem to remember, and the press really stretched a badly worded explanation of how it worked into ‘it eats corpses’. Which is fair, humans are mostly made from tasty biomass, but still.

edit: here’s a couple sources about it, it sounds like it does indeed run on vegetable biomass.

  • Short answer: It’s a turn of phrase the Incel movement popularized as a dehumanizing dogwhistle.

Long answer: In current American English, “Female” and “Females” are highly formal terms and really are only commonly used in situations like law and academic discourse (this is true of “male” and “males” as well, though there’s much less cultural baggage associated with those terms). People who use them in casual conversation instead of the much more common “Women” (or the diminutive, “Girls”) tend to be the kind of person that uses formal language to emphasize their own intellectual superiority over the common masses, and in particular all the women who won’t have sex with them. In fact and almost invariably, this is presented in the form of explanations about why nobody wants to have sex with them, and the cultural forces that are causing it, and why deep down it’s the women’s fault they can’t get a date, and it just all goes downhill from there.

    edit: clarity
