How would this proposed automated system even work? Would it have to know the track layout? Or would it have to close once the driver crosses a certain threshold on steering input?

That’s a good question. With any automated system you’re eliminating an area of competitiveness. Some drivers are going to push harder and close the flap that fraction later when it’s up to the drivers to do it themselves. Making it automated means everyone is going to have the DRS close at the same moment in the corner, which sounds boring and silly. Eliminating the DRS zone entirely would be a better solution if they were to do anything IMO.
I’d expect there to be a safety margin of “it closes after the end of the drs zone” if it triggers automatically you’re not only going to get a bad lap time cause you closed it too late and you’re likely to slide a bit at the next turn but you could also potentially get a warning the first time and a time penalty the second time.

Couldn’t the DRS flap close as the car exits the DRS zone? To be fair, I expected it to be the case until I discovered it wasn’t with Doohan’s crash.
